Swiss Machinist

Job Type: Hourly, Full Time (40hrs), 1st Shift

Eight hours minimum each day, choose hours from 6:15 AM – 4:30 PM

Position Summary: Candidate will be a job shop swiss machinist running mixed production. There will typically be between three and five setups per week on three machines. The ability to take initiative and work independently is a must. A quality-first mentality is vital to this position! The shop is an air-conditioned, relaxed work environment, and an engineer is on staff to assist with questions and training regarding processes.

We are seeking the right person to build (or continue) a long-term career with swiss machining, and advance their technical skills. This branch of Rochester Gear is located in Canandaigua, and currently has fewer than five employees. We are looking to grow our workforce with motivated machinists who are looking to further develop their career.

Essential Job Functions & Qualifications Required:

  • Formal education at BOCES/ high career program, or post-secondary education is preferred but not required.
  • Comfortable in a manufacturing environment and working directly with machine tools.
  • Demonstrate proficiencies from the list below in a reasonable time frame.

Required Experience:

Swiss Machine Proficiency:

  1. Tsugami experience is desired but not required.
  2. Ability to determine and make offsets. The candidate must be able to troubleshoot, adjust offsets, and change tooling to keep quality parts running.
  3. Candidates must be able to operate more than one machine at a time.
  4. Ability to set up and run small lot sizes: 50-2,000 pcs are typical lot sizes. Up to 15,000 pcs.
  5. Ability to indicate tools under .0003” TIR for reaming and solid carbide drilling.
  6. Critical thinking and troubleshooting skills. 
  7. The candidate must have good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with engineering regarding production issues.
  8. Able to run through programs carefully using dry run and other methods to ensure safe machine operation.

Inspection Skill Proficiency:

  1. Plate inspection, including the use of dead centers, sine plates, optical comparator, height stands, gage pins, and thread gages. Knows how to treat gages properly.
  2. Print reading and GD&T knowledge.
  3. Shop math skills such as addition, subtraction, basic trig, and determining in-process inspection dimensions to consistently run quality parts.
  4. Ability to clean out oil tanks annually, clean filters on machines bi-weekly, and manually chip out machines daily.
  5. Keep spindles, clamping mechanisms, and collets clean, greased, and well-maintained.
  6. Ensure work area, machine, and tools are kept clean and free of swarf and excess dirt buildup.
  7. Other basic maintenance skills a plus, but not a requirement.

Machinist: Gear Cutter

Job Type: Hourly, Full Time (40hrs), 1st Shift

Eight hours each day, within range of 6:15 AM – 4:30 PM 

(Overtime available based on performance)

Position Summary: Operate gear cutting equipment, perform setups based on print requirements, and ensure quality throughout the production process. Perform PM, in-process inspection, first piece inspection, and apply critical thinking to the machining process.

Essential Job Functions:        

  • Operate and maintain gear cutting equipment. This includes operating more than one machine at a time.
  • Measure workpieces as a guide for subsequent machining to ensure constant quality.
  • Based on print select workholding, cutting tools, align fixtures, and tooling using best practices on gear cutting equipment. Similar experience with machine tools is acceptable.
  • Verify gear geometry based on print specifications using hand tools such as micrometers, calipers, and height stands.
  • Experience with gear red-line machines is a bonus.
  • Set up and operate machine to safely produce and inspect first piece.
  • Demonstrate accuracy and thoroughness; monitor own work to ensure quality.
  • Follow company safety procedures; while using the equipment.
  • Communicate with coworkers and supervisor to receive instruction and coordinate activities.
  • Must be capable of critical thinking to ensure part quality throughout the production run.

Skills and Qualifications of Experience:

  • Experience with manual or CNC machines is required either through school or industry.
  • Must maintain quality while multitasking.
  • Reasoning skills are a must! Must be able to apply logical problem-solving skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently, and desire to continuously improve on skill set and technical knowledge.

Machinist: Broaching

Job Type: Hourly, Full Time (40hrs), 1st Shift

Hours vary between 6:15 AM – 4:30 PM
Overtime available based on performance

Position Summary:
Operate a variety of equipment with a specific focus on broaching and honing. Perform setups based on print requirements and ensure quality throughout the production process. Perform PM, in-process inspection, and first-piece inspection and apply critical thinking to the machining process. We are seeking the right person to build a long-term career in machining and advance their technical skills at Rochester Gear.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Learn from current Rochester Gear faculty to perform broaching and honing machining functions as they pertain to manufacturing gears.
